While the iPad is a big hit and sells in huge numbers, many power users still want a fully powered PC operating system running on a touch based device. That's the market Microsoft is trying to target with Windows 8, and if you thought Apple's Mac OS X was out of this race, you might be wrong.
Apple, of course, made its vision of tablet computing very clear, where many desktop metaphors were left behind, but a third party hardware company named Modbook Inc. hasn't given up on the idea of an OS X based tablet.
The Modbook Pro is built on top of the newly released 13.3" MacBook Pros, with an integrated digitzer in the display to recognize touches. The specs of the MacBook-iPad hybrid are as follows:
The Modbook Pro’s configurable base system includes a 2.5GHz dual core Intel® Core™ i5 processor or 2.9GHz dual core Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, a 2.5–inch SATA drive (up to 1TB HDD or up to 960GB SSD), an 8X SuperDrive® DVD burner, an Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless connectivity capability, a built-in 63.5-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery and a 60W MagSafe® power adapter.
The founder of the company is pretty convinced on the idea of a Mac OS X based tablet. His previous venture built Modbooks three years before the iPad was even launched.
9to5Mac notes that the Modbook Pro won't have a front facing camera due to the custom hardware replaced in place of the display. The company says that the Modbook will last an impressive seven hours on a full charge.
Modbook's creator, Andreas Haas, an Apple alum, was impressed by the Newton's pen based input. He says that the device is targeted towards "creative professionals," some of whom don't even require OS X, and simply install Windows 7 on their Modbooks using Boot Camp.
