We reported earlier today that Apple is planning to unveil the highly anticipated iPhone 5 along with the cheaper and smaller iPad mini, next generation iPod Touch and iPod nano at a special event on September 12th and will be released on September 21st.
AllThingsD now reports that their sources have also told them that Apple is currently planning an event in that week.
AllThingsD also points out that the recent spike in the company’s prepayment for inventory components also suggests that Apple will unveil the next generation iPhone at the event:
According to Apple’s latest 10-Q filing, prepayment for inventory components rose $1.15 billion sequentially in the June quarter. That’s a big increase and one that puts such prepayments at their highest level in four years — 12.6 percent of Apple’s total sales, according to Wells Fargo Securities analyst Maynard Um. And as Um notes, they’re a good indicator that Apple is ramping up for a big product launch — or several of them.
“Historically, such increases have been followed by a solid ramp-up in revenue in the following 2-3 quarters,” Um said in a Monday note to clients. “In our view, an increase in inventory component prepayment may suggest that Apple is securing supply for potential new product launches.”
AllThingsD has a good track record when it comes to Apple related rumors, so a confirmation from them indicates that Apple is indeed planning to unveil 'iPhone 5' in 6 weeks.
Update: Jim Dalrymple of The Loop who has an impeccable record when it comes to Apple related rumors has also confirmed it with his typical "Yes".
