Google has just released a new version of their Google Earth app that brings 3D Maps feature to the iPhone and iPad.
Back in June, Google had showcased the 3D feature at the "The Next Dimension of Google Maps" event and had announced that it would be also releasing it for iOS devices.
Here's what's new in Google Earth app:
• Tour guide: Explore places you never thought to search for with new tours of your favorite cities, historic landmarks and natural wonders. • 3D imagery: Take flight above entire cities in 3D. Get started with Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Geneva or Rome and look for new additions in the coming weeks.
The 3D imagery is available on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later.
The 3D Maps feature allows users to move around, rotate and interact with 3D models of several major cities. Google explained that they are using automated technology to extract 3D from aerial images taken from planes that fly in a tight pattern, equipped with their own hardware, taking 45-degree imagery. It currently covers 14 regions, including Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston and others. Google plans 3D coverage of areas with a combined population of 300 million people by the end of the year.
"The Next Dimension of Google Maps" event was seen as an attempt by Google to preempt Apple's plan to launch an all-new Maps app in iOS 6, which was eventually unveiled at WWDC 2012.
