Sharp President: Displays For New iPhone Will Start Shipping This Month

Sharp's new President, Takashi Okuda, revealed during a press briefing in Tokyo earlier today that the company will start shipping screens for the next generation iPhone this month.

Apple is widely expected to unveil their hotly anticipated 6th generation iPhone at a media event on September 12th, followed by the launch on September 21th.

Reuters reports:

Japan’s Sharp Corp. said it will start shipping screens destined for a new Apple iPhone that is widely expected to be released in October ahead of the pre-Christmas shopping season.

Not surprisingly, he declined to provide any further details about the screen. It is quite unusual for Apple's partner to talk about shipments for future Apple products.

Reuters goes on to add:

[..] The iPhone screens will also be thinner than their previous incarnations with the use of so-called in-cell panels

Sources earlier told Reuters that the panels will be 4 inches corner to corner -- 30 percent bigger than current iPhones. [..]

.

The next generation iPhone, which is commonly referred to as 'iPhone 5' is widely expected to feature a bigger 4-inch display to compete with Android-based smartphones that sport a much larger screen.

Apple is also expected to switch to in-cell display technology for 'iPhone 5', which should reduce the thickness  of the device as they eliminate the need for a separate touch screen layer.
