As we reported earlier today, it is widely speculated that Apple will replace the 30-pin dock connector with a smaller 19-pin dock connector in the next generation iPhone.
iMore now reports that according to their source who had provided them the tip about the smaller dock connector, Apple plans to also launch an adapter alongside the new iPhone that will allow users to connect accessories using the old 30-pin dock connector to the device’s new 19-pin connector.
iMore reports:
This doesn't come as a big surprise as we always expected Apple to offer the adapter/converter. It remains to be seen if Apple will include the adapter with 'iPhone 5' for free or sell it.
iMore reached out to the original sources that gave us the new Dock connector story way back in February just to make doubly sure — and yes, there will be an adapter for the iPhone 5′s smaller Dock connector that will let it work with many of the accessories designed for the old 30-pin Dock connector.
In our opinion, we doubt Apple will include the adapter with 'iPhone 5'. We expect Apple to use the same approach the company used with the MagSafe connector with the launch of the new MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs (which come with smaller MagSafe connecto). Apple sells the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter for $9.99 so that users who want to use the MagSafe connector on LED Cinema Display, Thunderbolt Display, or MagSafe Power Adapter to charge their MagSafe 2-equipped Mac computer can buy one.
