Case manufacturers are ready to take the big risk and produce accessories – or at least, the cases – for a rumored device that’s nowhere near being confirmed. In what seems to be yet another manufacturer trying to take the leap, Mobilefun.co.uk, a leading UK-based retailer of mobile phones and accessories, has unearthed some good-looking iPhone 5 cases and posted about it.
iJailbreak, which also reported on this, was smartly cautious about this.
You never know. The last time a fantastic iPhone 5 prototype leak surfaced on Gizmodo, it turned out to be a prank by a lead 3D designer who posted about it on Flickr later. The kind of stunningly crisp and DSLR-like image quality on the cases makes us wonder if this is just a render.
But then, all that apart, it is an interesting thing.
At the conference call for Q3, Tim Cook reported that a lot of exciting new devices are on the offing from Apple. iPhone 5 is definitely one of them. And from the leaked parts and sketches, it appears almost like a “given” that iPhone 5 will match the specs that we’ve all been talking about:
The most-notable iPhone 5 specifications (which affect how the case gets designed) are:
a 4″ retina display
19-pin dock connector that’s smaller than the old ones
So it is interesting especially when case manufacturers design their iPhone 5 cases based on these rumors. There are two sides to the story.
One: the case maker is taking a big risk and jumping into the production of such cases with the hope that iPhone 5 will be released with the exact specs.
In all these years, cases manufactured through speculated features and specs have not made as much hype because the overall design / shape of iPhone didn’t change much. Sure, the iPhone 4 was redesigned, losing the curvy edges of the 3GS but then, with not much of a change in the dimensions, these didn’t raise the anticipation.
Two: someone from Apple talked to someone from the supply chain; or someone from the supply chain, who knows of Apple’s iPhone 5 plans, spoke with someone in the accessories line-up. And that means a lot more of confirmation than mere speculation.
With the iPhone 5, sporting a 0.5″ increase in the display, is taller and changes the entire dimension.
