A new ChangeWave survey shows an uptick in planned consumer smart phone buying this quarter, led by an explosion of momentum for Samsung. But the number-one finding of the survey is the unprecedented level of advance demand for the next-generation iPhone, which Apple is expected to release later this year.
The June 18-25 survey of 4,042 consumers took a close-up look at demand for the new Samsung Galaxy S III vs. advance demand for an 'iPhone 5.' The survey also focused on key smart phone industry trends, including customer satisfaction, OS preferences and future demand for devices from a range of manufacturers, including Motorola, HTC, Nokia and Research in Motion. We note that this survey is primarily North American, with 88% of respondents from the US.
- 19% of the respondents wanted to buy a Samsung smartphone. The interest in buying a Samsung smartphone has increased by 6 points thanks primarily to the launch of Samsung Galaxy S III last month.
- Demand for Apple'x next generation iPhone was higher than the demand for iPhone 4S. 14% of the respondents said that they were very likely and 17% said that they were somewhat likely to buy the “iPhone 5” in the future.
- It was strikingly higher than the demand seen for iPhone 4S last year when ChangeWave carried out the survey in October. At that time, 10% of the respondents said that they were very likely and 11.5% said that they were somewhat likely to purchase the iPhone 4S.
It doesn't come as a major surprise that there is strikingly higher demand for iPhone 5 as it is widely speculated to come with a larger display, support 4G LTE networks etc.
The reason respondents want to buy Samsung Galaxy S III was "the size and the quality of the screen". It will be interesting to see how many of these respondents would have opted for iPhone 5, if they knew it could come with the rumored bigger display.
