Fix for Personal Hotspot Missing After iOS Update

Personal Hotspot is a great feature on the iDevices – iPhone and iPad – which enables you to connect a lot of other devices to the internet through your iDevice.

This feature is network-specific and has special charges (Verizon brought all shared data plans, but that’s an entire story altogether). However, by enabling shared data, you can activate Personal Hotspot on your iDevice.

But according to readers there is this issue of personal hotspot missing after iOS update. What this means is that as soon as they update to iOS 5.1 their Personal Hotspot goes missing on their iPhone.

Fix Personal Hotspot Missing in iPhone

Before you begin this step, or any other step for that matter, remember to store / write down your APN and DNS settings and wireless passwords. If in case you’re not sure of these, you have to ask your service provider (network) for that.

  • Go in Settings and click on “General” and scroll down at the bottom and tap on the “Reset”
  • Now click on “Reset Network Settings”
  • Then go back to Settings and there you will find the Personal Hotspot option

You need to save the important network settings before resetting the network preferences or else you will lose your wireless network passwords as well as custom DNS settings.

A second way to fix the Personal Hotspot missing is to retype the access point name through Internet Tethering settings:

Update: Another possible fix is to retype the access point name in through Internet Tethering settings. This can be accessed through Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data, look under “Internet Tethering” for APN, and fill in an access point name. A username and password are not required.
