According to the New York Times, Apple has a agreed to pay Chinese company Proview, $60 million dollars. This comes after a trademark dispute begin as to whether Proview had the rights to the iPad name. Apple had bought out the iPad name globally in 2009, but the rights in China never transferred. A court ruled that Proview rightfully owned the name, after which authorities were asked to sieze iPads. Thankfully it’s been resolved and iPads can start making their way into the Chinese market.
The New York Times has more information:
“The iPad dispute resolution is ended,” the Guangdong High People’s Court said in a statement. “Apple Inc. has transferred $60 million to the account of the Guangdong High Court as requested in the mediation letter. China is Apple’s second-largest market after the United States and the source of much of the Cupertino, California-based company’s sales growth. This is a result that is acceptable to both sides,” Xie, a lawyer for the company, said.“
Can’t say that I’m too surprised to hear any of this. It’s known that Apple likes court rooms, but it’s also known that the Cupertino based company usually gets what it wants. $60 million is a lot of money, but nothing compared to how much Apple will make by selling the iPad in its second largest market.
What do you guys think? Is Apple being petty is all the current legal disputes? Or are they well warranted?
