A ton of iPhone 5 part leaks have happened over the past few days. The last week was particularly hectic in terms of part leaks and images that kept surfacing ahead of the September 12 event where Apple is expected to announce the arrival of iPhone 5.
Popular tech blogger Sonny Dickson notes, through various sources and references, that there is no NFC chip on the iPhone 5. In fact, the new high-definition leaks have revealed that what was thought to be NFC chip was in fact the covering over the ear-piece speaker!
We’re not sure if that’s a disappointment but it sure makes sense because Apple has not been very keen on NFC all the time. There were several indications about NFC being included in iPhone 5 specs but from Apple’s point of view, there was nothing at all to corroborate those reports.
With 4G LTE, it seems like an inevitability. In fact, Apple has already dabbled with it on the iPad and it appeared logical to conclude that Apple will be introducing 4G to iPhones too.
So out goes NFC.
To those who were expecting Near-field to be incorporated into the next-gen iPhone, this is probably the final verdict.
Yes, doubts exist. NFC could also be – as pointed out much earlier by AnandTech – placed at the center of the device and could as yet be an unleaked part of the entire device but chances for that seem to be very less.
Apple, a company that takes security vulnerabilities very seriously, would also be aware of the security flaws and problems that modern NFC still faces. May be that prompts them to boldly drop the notion of incorporating NFC into iPhone 5′s features.
The iPhone 5 event is set to take place on September 12th. All our doubts would be put to rest on that day.
